Derek Jeter Plays Final Game

Derek Jeter is officially a retired man after playing his last game of professional baseball in Fenway Park today. In his career, he played in fourteen All-Star games, won five Gold Glove Awards and earned five World Series rings. It will be weird not seeing him in the Yankees lineup next year. Check out this moving Jordan commercial honoring the accomplished athlete.

Derek Jeter's Final Game at Yankee Stadium

Baseball superstar Derek Jeter played his last game at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night. Naturally, the ratings were very strong yesterday. Although I am a Red Sox fan, his final at-bat appearance in the bottom of the ninth inning was unforgettable. It's hard not to feel happy for him and his fans. Check out the video below:

New Cast Members of 'True Detective' Season 2

Rachel McAdams

Vince Vaughn
Colin Farrell

It was announced today that Rachel McAdams will join the second season of 'True Detective.' McAdams is best known for starring in romantic comedies such as 'The Vow,' 'About Time,' and 'Midnight in Paris.' The news is a little surprising because there were rumors that actress Elisabeth Moss would be on the drama series. Fans of the HBO show, including myself, were also surprised when the network cast Vince Vaughn, who is mostly known for his comedic performances in movies like 'Anchorman,' 'Dodgeball,' and 'Old School.' However, just a reminder that before 'Breaking Bad,' actor Bryan Cranston was best known for starring on the sitcom 'Malcolm in the Middle.' I am pretty pumped for the sophomore season of 'True Detective.' It will be cool to see McAdams and Vaughn on the screen together for the first time since the hit movie 'Wedding Crashers.'

'Magic Mike' Sequel

It was announced today that actress Andie MacDowell will join the sequel to the 2012 movie 'Magic Mike.' Check out who is in for 'Magic Mike XXL,' and who will not be returning.

IN

It's pretty obvious that Channing Tatum, the lead from the original movie, will be returning for the second one. In addition to reprising his role as a male stripper, he also co-wrote the script to the sequel.

The very hunky Matt Bomer is signed on for the next movie. He talked a little about the plot on an appearance on 'The Ellen Degeneres Show.' Check out that clip here.

OUT

It genuinely bums me out that Matthew McConaughey will not be returning for 'Magic Mike XXL.' I thought he was hysterical as Dallas, the club owner who also liked to strip.

It does not appear that the talented Olivia Munn will come back for more 'Magic Mike.'

UNCLEAR

No reports have come out confirming Alex Pettyfer's involvement in the sequel. However, he is listed as 'rumored' on the Imdb page for the movie, so we will see!

SORTA

Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first movie, will not direct the second one. However, he will be the director of photography for the sequel.

Meet Another New SNL Cast Member
In my last blog post I wrote about Pete Davidson, the young comic who will be a featured player in the upcoming season of 'Saturday Night Live.' Michael Che, who will be replacing Cecily Strong as an anchor on Weekend Update, is currently a correspondent on 'The Daily Show.' His work on the Comedy Central program has been hysterical, so I will be sad to see him leave the show. Check out this hilarious segment he did on yesterday's episode:

It was announced today that comedian Pete Davidson will join the upcoming season of 'Saturday Night Live.' I am pretty excited to see the twenty-year-old comedian join the sketch comedy show. Check out this hilarious stand-up routine he performed on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' this past April.

Movies Adapted to Television Shows

It was announced this week that the 2002 movie 'Minority Report' will be developed into a show for Fox. Let's take a look at some of the most successful television shows that are based on movies.

'Fargo' (1996) and 'Fargo' (2014-present)

I fully admit that I was skeptical when I first heard about the FX series 'Fargo.' The movie is one of the best from the Coen brothers, and I just couldn't imagine it as a show. However, I read a lot of good comments about the program on Facebook and decided to give the show a chance. The pilot is one of the best pilots from 2014. The freshman season received a whopping 18 Emmy nominations. The original movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' (1992) and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' (1997-2003)

The best thing about watching the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' movie is seeing future Oscar winners Ben Affleck and Hillary Swank have minor roles in the flick. The series, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, ran for seven seasons and earned Gellar a Golden Globe nomination for her work on season five of the program.

'Teen Wolf' (1985) and 'Teen Wolf' (2011-present)

1980s heartthrob Michael J. Fox starred in the campy movie 'Teen Wolf.' It was popular enough that it spawned a 1987 sequel starring Jason Bateman. MTV decided to make a TV series based on the movie, and the show just had its season four finale. The drama has been a hit for the network. Season five will premiere sometime in 2015.

'The Star-Spangled Banner' Turns 200

Stephen Colbert had a great interview on his show last night with historian Lonn Taylor. At around minute 4:30, the host asks his guest if he has a favorite performance of our country's national anthem. Mr. Taylor doesn't quite answer the question, so it got me thinking of my favorite rendition of the song. Check out my pick below:

R.I.P  Richard Kiel

Richard Kiel, who was probably best known for acting in two James Bond movies ('The Spy Who Loved Me' and 'Moonraker'), passed away yesterday. But if you were a 90s child like me, you probably best remember him from the hilarious movie 'Happy Gilmore.' Check out these clips of him below:

R.I.P Joan Rivers

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers passed away today at the age of 81. I think this might be her funniest quote:

"My husband wanted to be cremated. I told him I'd scatter his ashes at
Neiman Marcus-that way, I'd visit him every day."

Movies Released on 70mm

Yesterday it was announced that Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film will be released on 70mm. When a movie is released on 70mm, it means that it was shot on 65mm and it becomes 70mm once the soundtrack has been added. Movies aren't even being shot on 35mm anymore, so the news about this feature is pretty exciting. The film stock of 70mm is twice the width of 35mm film, so the 'Hateful Eight' will look amazing on the big screen. Check out some of my favorite movies that were also released on 70mm.

'The Sound of Music'

'2001: A Space Odyssey'

'Hamlet'

New Movies on Netflix

A lot of movies that I am looking forward to seeing in theaters aren't going to be released for a while. 'The Imitation Game,' starring Benedict Cumberbatch, doesn't come out until November. The highly anticipated movie 'Interstellar' will also not hit theaters until November. If you are in the same boat as me, check out some great new movie titles that are now on Netflix Instant. Here are some of my suggestions below:

PERIOD PIECE MOVIE

'Good Morning, Vietnam'

A lot of people who have been mourning the death of Robin Williams have been re-watching his movies. If you still haven't seen 'Good Morning, Vietnam,' I suggest you do. This amazing 1987 movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

FAMILY CHOICE

'Cool Runnings'

I adore this 1993 Disney movie. If you need something to watch with your kids, this is a great sports movie about the Jamaican Bobsled team that participated in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

DRAMATIC PICK

'All is Lost' (will start streaming on September 5)

I really enjoyed this 2013 feature. This minimalist movie is exciting to watch, and Robert Redford is the dreamiest septuagenarian out there.
