Up to ten movies can be nominated for best picture. The 2012 awards had nine movies on the list, but this is the first year that only eight were nominated.
2. Wes Anderson: First Best Director Nomination
After making memorable movies like 'Rushmore' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums,' Wes Anderson is long overdue for a best director nomination from the Academy. He finally got one this morning for directing 'The Grand Budapest Hotel.'
3. Bradley Cooper and Marion Cotillard: The Surprise Nominations!
Some years have surprise nominations in the acting categories. Remember when Tommy Lee Jones came out of left field and got a nomination for 'In the Valley of Elah?' Well, this morning it was a bit of a shocker when Bradley Cooper's name was read for 'American Sniper,' and Marion Cotillard's name was read for the movie 'Two Days, One Night.' Neither of these actors got Golden Globe nominations, SAG nominations, or even BAFTA nominations for these two films.
